How to Wash Clothes Without Shrinking Them 2

Shrinkage is one of the most frustrating laundry problems — you pull out a favourite shirt and it’s two sizes smaller. The good news? It’s almost always preventable if you know what causes it.

Why Do Clothes Shrink?

Most fabrics shrink because of heat and agitation. Natural fibres like cotton, wool and linen are especially vulnerable — their fibres tighten when exposed to hot water or a hot dryer. Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon are more resistant, but can still shrink at very high temperatures.

“The single biggest cause of shrinkage isn’t the washing cycle — it’s the dryer. Tumble drying on high heat is the quickest way to ruin a garment.”

How to Wash Without Shrinking

1. Check the care label

Always read the care label first. If it says “cold wash” or “hand wash only”, follow it. The label exists for a reason — the fabric manufacturer knows exactly what the material can handle.

2. Use cold or warm water (not hot)

For most everyday garments, cold water (20–30°C) is sufficient to clean effectively and won’t cause shrinkage. Reserve warm water (40°C) for heavily soiled items. Hot water (60°C+) should only be used for towels and bedding.

3. Use a gentle cycle

Agitation is the second main cause of shrinkage. Use the delicate or gentle cycle for knitwear, wool and any item you’re particularly careful about.

4. Air dry where possible

The dryer is the biggest risk. Wherever possible, lay garments flat to dry or hang them on a rack. If you do use a dryer, use the lowest heat setting and remove clothes while still slightly damp.

Fabrics That Are Most at Risk

  • Cotton — can shrink 3–5% on first wash; pre-washed cotton is safer
  • Wool — avoid heat and agitation entirely; hand wash or wool cycle only
  • Linen — shrinks on first wash, then stabilises
  • Rayon/Viscose — very prone to shrinkage; dry clean or hand wash recommended

What If It Already Shrunk?

In many cases you can partially reverse shrinkage by soaking the item in lukewarm water with a small amount of hair conditioner for 30 minutes, then gently stretching it back to shape while damp. It won’t always work perfectly, but it’s worth trying before throwing the item out.
